Condition: Very Good. [Guide Book to Nikko Area from with Collotype Illustrations]. 5 x 7 1/2 in, horizontal format, paper wraps, string ties, 78 pp. This is a seventy eight page guide book which contains 38 black and white collotype plates with images of important sights and relics in the Nikko area.

It is dated Showa 5 (). The book “Studio Collotype” by Kent Kirby is a good explanation of the process, with historical photos. Gerald Lange has used the process, by Vandercook, and written about it: very difficult as the plate is an emulsion of gelatin on glass and humidity control is absolutely necessary.

These prints are green and brown but the book has other plates that run the full gamut of collotype colors. When I was a young printer, and working in a shop that still did collotype, the pressmen made quite a fuss about the ink, and even in the s imported it from Europe, where we all assumed it was made by grinding pigment, bats’ wings.

Sights and Scenes on the Tokaido, Tokyo, K. Ogawa, Folio, 1 page preface, 4 pages of introduction, 20 black and white collotype plates, 22 pages of descriptive text, total of 47 pp. The 20 black and white collotype plates contain a total of 44 images. Twelve plates have a single image and 8 plates have 4 images each.

Collotype, like lithography, is based on the principle that oil and water do not mix. The image is printed in the same way as a lithograph.

The plate is dampened with a solution of glycerine and water, and a greasy lithographic ink is rolled over it. The unexposed portions of the plate soak up water and then repel the greasy ink.

COLLOTYPE. The collotype is a continuous tone printing process first patented in France by Alphonse Louis Poitevin in under the name Phototypie. It began to be used commercially as the Albertotype in after Josef Albert in Germany perfected the method, but when patented in the United States one year later it was given the name Artotype.

The technique begins with a greyed glass plate. Heliogravure, photogravure or collotype reproductions are often reproduced in a size smaller than the original. Don’t automatically assume it’s a 1st edition.

It may indeed have been printed from the artist’s original plate, stone or wood block (and thus would still be considered an original print). Encouraging children to read and love books is one of the best things that you can do for any child.

As we all know, every book is a new world and leads on to other new worlds. Bookplates encourage children to see books as special and very personal. They can also inspire a collecting spirit which can spill over into many other areas.

Poitevin used lithographic stone with albumen to create photo-sensitive plate. Tessié du Motay and C. Maréchal developed process using copper plate coated with gelatin. Joseph Albert developed process using glass plate coated with gelatin, which was the first commercially successful collotype process.

At its most basic, a bookplate is a slip of paper bearing the name of the book’s owner; at its most grand, it may be a veritable work of art as well. As ebook sales make up an increasingly sizable share of book sales, it may seem logical that we’ll see more and more book-themed iPhone cases and fewer ex librises and bookmarks.
