[Guide Book to Nikko Area from with Collotype Illustrations]. 5 x 7 1/2 in, horizontal format, paper wraps, string ties, 78 pp. This is a seventy eight page guide book which contains 38 black and white collotype plates with images of important sights and relics in the Nikko area.
It is dated Showa 5 (). The book “Studio Collotype” by Kent Kirby is a good explanation of the process, with historical photos. Gerald Lange has used the process, by Vandercook, and written about it: very difficult as the plate is an emulsion of gelatin on glass and humidity control is absolutely necessary.
These prints are green and brown but the book has other plates that run the full gamut of collotype colors. Collotype, like lithography, is based on the principle that oil and water do not mix. The image is printed in the same way as a lithograph.
The plate is dampened with a solution of glycerine and water, and a greasy lithographic ink is rolled over it. The unexposed portions of the plate soak up water and then repel the greasy ink.
COLLOTYPE. The collotype is a continuous tone printing process first patented in France by Alphonse Louis Poitevin in under the name Phototypie. It began to be used commercially as the Albertotype in after Josef Albert in Germany perfected the method, but when patented in the United States one year later it was given the name Artotype.
The technique begins with a greyed glass plate. Heliogravure, photogravure or collotype reproductions are often reproduced in a size smaller than the original. Don’t automatically assume it’s a 1st edition.
